Do I Still Want the Life I Was Working Towards Before Motherhood?

Before motherhood, many of us have some idea of where life is heading. We study, think about careers, make plans and imagine the kind of future we want to build. It may not all happen exactly as expected, but there is often a sense of direction.

Motherhood can change that direction in ways we do not always anticipate. Priorities shift, and decisions about work are no longer based only on career progression or salary. Family life becomes part of the equation too, and for some women that means spending several years at home, moving countries, putting a career on hold or choosing work that fits around their children.

After enough time, returning to work can feel very different from simply picking up where you left off. The qualifications and experience may still be there, but confidence can change, and so can your idea of what you actually want. Sometimes the first job back is less about pursuing a particular career and more about earning again, rebuilding confidence and seeing what feels possible.

It is often through that process that another question begins to emerge: Do I even want the life I was working towards before motherhood?

The answer does not have to be a clear yes or no. Some ambitions may still matter just as much, while others no longer fit the life you want. You may still want meaningful work, financial independence and the satisfaction of building something of your own, but now flexibility and control over your time may matter just as much. That can lead some women towards self-employment, while others may return to their previous field on different terms or decide to take a completely new direction.

Some dreams can stay with us even when the way we imagine them changes. Travel, for example, may have once been something you planned to do before settling down. Years later, the desire may still be there, except now you picture experiencing those places with your children and creating those memories together.

Perhaps that is why trying to return to the exact life we imagined before motherhood is not always the most useful goal. A better starting point may be to ask: Which parts of that life do I still want, and what matters to me now?

The answer can help bring some clarity. Maybe you still want the career but need greater flexibility. Maybe independence matters more than a particular job title. Maybe you want to build a business, return to something you put aside or explore a direction you had never considered before.

Changing the plan does not mean the ambition disappeared. It simply means the life around it changed, and you changed with it.

The important thing is not getting back to where you thought you would be. It is deciding where you want to go from here.
